Since hormones and acne are related, there is a particular kind of acne called hormonal acne. This hormonal acne
may not respond to acne treatments. Acne is influenced by hormones. According to dermatologist Alan Shalita, almost
half of the women experience acne the week before their period.
Hormones and acne may pose a problem and for some people they may feel their confidence go down a bit. But do
not worry because you can still do something to help ease the problems of hormones and acne.
Hormones and Acne
Let us first find out how hormones and acne are related. Where hormones and acne began: sometime around the age
of puberty, the adrenal glands became active and produced an androgen or a male hormone. Hormones and acne can be
quite challenging in teenagers. As you try to treat these hormones and acne, you might notice that there is a
response initially. But then later on, hormonal shifts may make it hard for the treatment of acne.
Hormones and acne are normal at a certain age. You just have to know how to change the course of treatment for
acne to accommodate the hormonal changes that happen in a teenager.
Although hormonal acne is common to those between the age of 20-25, teens and mature women can have it as well.
Sometimes, this can even persist in women who are over the age of 30. Usually, patients have acne on their lower
face, chin and jaw line. Some may have acne on the chest and on the back but most are on the face.
According to studies, the earlier acne appears means there is a higher chance that it will be a severe case. So
the belief that only teenagers have acne is a myth. Teenagers may not admit that they are very much bothered by
their acne. Remember that at this stage looking good is very important so having acne is a great obstacle in their
social life.
When the acne is severe, then it is considered to be a medical problem. Severe cases of acne may cause permanent
scarring. When the acne is very little the scars will not show. However, if the scars accumulate over time, it
might cause damage to the person’s complexion. It is best to treat acne as soon as possible so that scarring will
be kept at a minimum.
Hormonal testing for severe cases of acne may prove to be helpful. This is the same thing that is done to
patients who are suffering from alopecia. There is a need for a physician when the acne cannot be controlled by
medications.
Hormones and Acne
Is there a way to stop acne breakouts that are caused by hormones? One way that can help is having good
nutrition. Today is the age of fast food and processed foods. How about if you try to eat vegetables and fruits?
This is not only good for your skin but for your body as a whole as well. Limit the intake of alcohol and coffee,
if you can, eliminate it in your diet. Drink plenty of water each day because this will help nourish your
skin. It will give your skin the moisture that it needs and flush the toxins out of your body. Take care of your
body. Exercise everyday to get your body moving.
